Tesco International Case Study

International Summer BBQ Staff Night (120 attendees).

Tesco Ireland has consistently been amongst the top three supermarket chains in Ireland, and holds a deserved reputation for retailing high quality products at great value prices. The company’s distribution centre in Donabate is the biggest building in Ireland, and is also amongst the top ten largest buildings in the world. Naturally, such a huge building requires a large workforce, many of whom originate from outside of Ireland.

Keen to foster a spirit of co-operation and team building between the many different nationalities who work at the centre, Tesco Ireland asked the Hijack Events team to organise a Summer BBQ night with an international theme. Tesco wanted to celebrate the diversity of its staff whilst at the same time bringing them all together.

The Hijack Events team took responsibility for all aspects of the event, including sourcing and decorating the venue, hiring a band and the catering staff, and ensuring that the food and drink menus were compatible with the different cultural, dietary and religious requirements of all the staff. As with all occasions organised by Hijack Events, members of the team were on site to deal with any issues.

The chosen location was the Airport View Hotel, and a marquee was also hired to expand the available space. The Hijack Events team created a stunning background, decorating the venue with a wide selection of flags to represent all the different nationalities. The event began with a champagne reception, followed by the BBQ, all accompanied by music from a live band.

Tesco Ireland MD Michael Kelly was very pleased with the results of the event. The company was happy to entrust all the organisation to the Hijack Events team, safe in the knowledge that everything would be in place, and that the event would run without a hitch. The BBQ succeeded in its aim of bringing staff together, and it also created a feel-good factor in the workplace.
